This is a fictionalized story of Marryats own experience in the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic era. Obviously, this is right up my alley. Regrettably, though, I did not enjoy Marryats work nearly so much as the Horatio Hornblower books by C.S. Forester. Marryat actually lived during the time period, while Forester lived about... I know this is supposed to be Marryat's best work, and I also realize that the problems I had with it were because of where and when it was wrtten, but I found large parts of this book regpugnant. The adventures are pretty well written, although they presuppose a far greater understanding of sailing than I have, so many passages now... For lovers of the Hornblower series this is a must read. I was surprised to find that for a novel written in 1848 it was such an easy read. No pun intended. As was the style of the time some passages were overlong and it may have been a better novel as three or four shorter novels, but that is the way of the modern novel. A public domain...
