The enchanting follow-up to Village School, Miss Read's beloved first novel, Village Diary once again transports us to the picturesque English village of Fairacre. Each chapter describes a month in the life of the village school's headmistress, Miss Read. As the villagers prepare for their country pageant, Fairacre welcomes many newcomers, such as the headstrong Amy, Mr. Mawne (whom the villagers would like to see the reluctant Miss Read marry), and the earnest new infants' teacher, Miss Jackson.

More About Village Diary
[regarding a toothache] It made me realize how much one's mind is at the mercy of one's physical well-being, as at times I felt quite demented. My admiration for people who withhold information under torture has increased ten-fold since this ghastly night, for I am quite certain that even the threat of such pain would be enough to make me blab put any secret, and even to make up further disclosures if I felt that these might mitigate the pain at all. As they meander along the lane that leads to our school all kinds of natural toys present themselves for their diversion. The seedpods of stitchwort hang ready for delightful popping between thumb and finger, and later the bladder campion offers a larger, if less crisp, globe to burst. In the autumn, acorns, beechnuts, and conkers bedizen their path, with all their manifold possibilities of fun. In the summer, there...
I used Goodreads' most read authors widget (to the left of the My Books screen) and realized that I had not added all of Miss Read to my books read list. I do love Miss Read and I have for about 50 years. My mother loved her, my grandmother loved her...and though she seems very out of data, those of us who teach or spend other structured... Miss Read receives a diary from her wealthy friend and chronicles a year of her life as headmistress in the small village school in Fairacres. Each chapter covers a month in the very predictable country life cycle. Miss Read has her difficulties with Miss Pringle, the school custodian, and Miss Jackson, the new young primary school... Library copy, and a re-read. Felt like I'd been there before, but always enjoy her writing. This quote from page 152 sums it up well: "Sitting alone, in that classroom, with only the tick of the wall-clock and the faint shouts of my approaching pupils to be heard, I felt, perhaps more keenly than ever before, just what it means to be...
