The Mahabharata: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic
A Fiction, Religion, Epic book. This work opens the eyes of the world blinded by ignorance. As the sun dispels darkness,...
The Mahabharata is some 3,500 years old and is the longest poem in any language. It is one of the founding epics of Indian culture and, with its mixture of cosmic drama and profound philosophy (one small section forms the BHAGHAVAD GITA) it holds aunique place in world literature. In this drastically shortened prose rendering, Narayan uses all his extraordinary talents to convey to a modern reader why this is such a great story. Filled with vivid characters, obsessed with the rise and fall of gods, empires and heroes, Narayan's MAHABHARATA is an enormously enjoyable experience and the perfect introduction to the otherwise bewildering Indian cosmology.

More About The Mahabharata: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic
This work opens the eyes of the world blinded by ignorance. As the sun dispels darkness, so does Bharata by its exposition of religion, duty, action, contemplation, and so forth. As the full moon by shedding soft light helps the buds of the lotus to open, so this Purana by its exposition expands the human intellect. The lamp of history illumines the whole mansion of the womb of Nature. Vyasa R.K. Narayan, The Mahabharata: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic // Those who believe in destiny and those who drift without such beliefs are alike the worst among men; only those who act and perform what is right for their station in life are worthy of praise. Man R.K. Narayan, The Mahabharata: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic //
Now I want to read a more extended version.although even the shortened version felt very reminiscent of the kinds of digressions which are in the Iliad. A great easy to read version of the story. Everything that is out there is in here...what is not here, is nowhere. I wanted to read The Mahabharata because I was ashamed of my ignorance of Indian mythology. I chose to read R.K. Narayan's version because he is a great story-teller. I was not disappointed at all. This abridged version is just what I was looking for to gain knowledge without making it cumbersome as such epics can get for a modern reader....
