Lion Heart by Justin Cartwright has a lot going for it as a novel. It has great characterization with Richard Cathar, who can easily evoke sympathy, the mysterious and troubled Noor and Haneen who keep you second guessing as to who they really are what is really going on, and the eccentric Lord Huntington who, I suppose, everyone needs... The lead in this book expresses a certain level of cynicism about literature of various types, and specifically names and denigrates Dan Brown. He also has a negative assessment of creative writing lecturers, but had the author paid more attention to creative writing tips he would not have written such a sub-Dan Brown piece of pulp,... just finished it. really marvellous. Hardly any of the irony or knowingness that made The Promise of Happiness and Other People's Money so delighful. BUT Cartwright's decides to commit you to an improbable story, and one he will try to make moving and emotionally resonant. And he succeeds. I wonder would a woman read it differently?...
