I am a big Anne Perry fan, especially of her World War I series, and have liked her Monk mysteries very much. But this one just didn't have the "grab" I've come to expect in her works. Monk was like a cardboard stereotype grousing through the novel licking his ego and being unconscionably cruel to Hester, even to the point of calling... When I started Cain and his Brother, I thought it was going to be one of the best Monk novels I had read. Monk is actually the main character. Hester Latterly is there, in a warehouse nursing typhoid patients during an outbreak in Limehouse, a tenement suburb of London. Lady Callandra Daviot and Dr. Kristian Beck are working there too,... I found Cain His Brother a bit of a disappointment after The Sins of the Wolf. Especially in the beginning. Readers be warned, you may spend a lot of time YELLING at William Monk. Especially in the first half of this one. William Monk has been somewhat sympathetic even if flawed in earlier books, but, in this one, well, the way he speaks...
