"A Novel of Suspense" is in my opinion, not appropriate as part of the title. With the exception of a short passage in the beginning and towards the end, I found there to be no suspense, little action, and mainly dialogue. I thought this novel would be somewhat a cross between Diane Lane's "Cellular" & "Life on Mars" (British version)... I am usually a fan of this series, but not when it deals with gang warfare or the criminal underworld. That is simply something I am not interested in, and there's too much of it here! So that's a personal preference - much the same reason I gave The Burning Girl a low score. I prefer the serial killer/murder mystery aspect - ghoulish,... This is my second Tom Thorne novel. I really hope there aren't as many crooked cops as there are in these books. That's as scary as any thing I have read so far. I liked that Tom sympathized with the 'bad guy' and how Tom struggles with staying true to his beliefs of what a copper should do. There is quite a bit of the day to day running...
