A Fantasy, Science Fiction Fantasy book. It's ok. It's good to learn more of Yulan, but not much more is...

For years they've sold their martial and magical skills to the highest bidder, winning countless victories that have overthrown kings and shaken empires. Yulan is a newcomer to their ranks, keen to prove himself worthy of the Free's name. When corsair marauders ravage the Hommetic Kingdom's coastline, Yulan gets his chance. His mission is simple: travel to the corsairs' island fortress, persuade their self-proclaimed king to sign a peace treaty, then head home with sword unbloodied. Yet the crumbling fortress holds many secrets, and blades speak louder than words. Soon Yulan must fight not just for the glory of the Free, but for his very survival.

More About A Tale of the Free: Corsair
4 starsVery quick action filled short story. I found this very diverting, and I'm looking forward to reading more by Brian Ruckley. You could pick this up without having read The Free and still enjoy it. It's ok. It's good to learn more of Yulan, but not much more is gained. having read The Free, I feel I followed along well enough, but I'm not sure someone who has not read the novel will grasp or appreciate some of this novella's aspects. fun enough sword adventure with some decent characters.
