I read this novel years ago and liked it. I liked it the second time as well, but I realizd I'd missed so much of the point of this novel the first time around. This is a depressing story and I hate to admit that I have anything in common with the narrator, but I understood her desperation. This is a chick novel; an ADULT Woman novel.... Takes on beauty and aging and assimilation but in a heavy-handed fashion. I also didn't find the quality in the prose that other readers have. The narrative voice just wasn't compelling, so I shut things down @ 100 (out of 200) pages in. In my mind, The Bluest Eye is same themes, better book. Truly amazing meta-fiction done by indigenous author Janet Campbell Hale.
