This selection, translated from the catalan, marks the debut of Salvador Espriu in this country. There were some really strong elegies. Though I expected more range, and I didn't get that. Still a worthwhile read though. A challenge. This will take another reading. The language is so obscure; how much due to censorship and how much to Espriu's innate art is hard to know. Like Joo Cabral de Melo Neto's selected works I just completed, the early obscurity gives way to intense, wise meditations on life and death near the end.
