Ted Fullilove, aka Mr. Peanut, is not like other Ivy League grads. He shares an apartment with Goldberg, his beloved battery-operated fish, sleeps on a bed littered with yellow legal pads penned with what he hopes will be the next great American novel, and spends the waning malaise-filled days of the Carter administration at Yankee Stadium, waxing poetic while slinging peanuts to pay the rent. When Ted hears the news that his estranged father, Marty, is dying of lung cancer, he immediately moves back into his childhood home, where a whirlwind of revelations ensues. The browbeating absentee father of his youth is living to make up for lost time, but his health dips drastically whenever his beloved Red Sox lose. And so, with help from a crew of neighborhood old-timers and the lovely Mariana--Marty's Nuyorican grief counselor--Ted orchestrates the illusion of a Sox winning streak, enabling Marty and the Red Sox to reverse the Curse of the Bambino and cruise their way to World Series victory....

More About Bucky F*cking Dent
He wanted to argue like this forever. This was better than nothing. There was no exhausting his anger at his father, and every word, however well intentioned or intentionally barbed, was a pull at a scab on his bloody heart. It was too late for any of this. There could ultimately be no healing. Marty had terminal cancer, and so did the two men have a cancer between them. They were terminal together, as father and son. They remained, momentarily exhausted, but it was really only that quiet between lightning and thunder as sound lags behind speed. The... When Ted opened the door to find Mariana there, his first thought was, "I don't know what I'm wearing." And he didn't look down; he had a bad feeling and didn't want to face it, he kept his eyes on the girl, who said, "Hello, Theodore. David Duchovny, Bucky F*cking Dent // He still loved her, loved her more for her wrinkles because they could not defeat his need for her. Or his love. His young lust had turned to love and then his love had aged back into lust. It was a circle. It was a miracle. It was the alchemy of flesh. They ate only what they caught from the sea - wahoo, barracuda, and mahi mahi, and they ate what they picked from the trees - papaya, banana, and coconut. Don't forget cerveza from the bodega. They did not run, they walked. They needed nothing but themselves. This was them: They were. David Duchovny,...
Until I heard of this novel via a Washington Times list of books to read this summer that was shared by a friend, I wasn't even aware that Duchovny was a novelist, but I have to say that I loved this, his second book.Set primarily in 1978 in Brooklyn, it features a father and son relationship which has been estranged for a number of... This book absolutely stunned me - in a good way. I wasn't sure what to expect from David Duchovny as an actor turned writer, but I can say with utmost sincerity that the man has a gift. When I started reading Bucky F*cking Dent I admittedly was channeling Fox Mulder - I could hear his voice in the dry humour and sarcasm. However the... Impressive. I had no idea who Bucky F Dent was nor what to expect (I was not a big fan of his previous book). But Wow. I was very pleasantly surprised. Touching. Realistic -mostly- but certainly when human interactions and feelings are involved. Mr. Duchovny had me at Fox Mulder. I could have stopped there and been quite content. Then...
