I've never read a book on race in America. I'm glad this was the first. The main thesis of the book is crystal clear and thoroughly researched. I don't want to steal the thunder of the author by stating it here in my own words. The story of how civil rights only move forward when it is politically expedient. It is a march that has moved in fits and starts. An important book about race relations in America and how civil rights have progressed in fits and starts and only at politically expedient times (namely wars, both hot and cold). The depressing thing is the book was written in 1999 and it has proven to be 100% prescient in its warnings that America is headed for major racial divisions...
